John E. Bishop, was elected to serve as Atchison County Commissioner for the First District in November, 2006. Commissioner Bishop was born in 1939 in Topeka, Kansas. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1957, then spent two years in the United States Navy. In 1966, he graduated from Washburn University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. He received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas in 1976.
Commissioner Bishop came to Atchison in 1971 to become Director of Social Welfare. Eventually, he owned and operated Daylight Donut Shop for twenty three years, retiring in July 2006.
Community service has been an important part of Commissioner Bishop’s life. He served four years as an Atchison City Commissioner, he is on the Board of the Atchison Art Association, President of the Riverbend Habitat for Humanity, and also serves on the Atchison Tree Board.
Currently, he is the Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church. His wife, Marge (Ellerman) Bishop, is the daughter of Orville Ellerman who was Atchison County Commissioner serving terms from 1953 to 1957, 1961 to 1965, and 1971 to 1975. Together, Commissioner Bishop and his wife have five children and eight grandchildren.
